Leadership
Maurice Burton began his journey of lifelong learning in Richmond Public Schools, beginning with Pre-K at JEB Stuart and graduating from Huguenot High School in 1995. After earning his B.S. in Biology from Old Dominion University, Maurice Burton began his teaching career at a residential facility for children. It was there he discovered a love for students with disabilities and mental health needs. In 2004, he returned to his hometown as a special education teacher at Thompson MS. He subsequently served in various central office positions in Henrico County and Richmond City. In 2013, he was named principal of the newly formed Richmond Career Education and Employment Academy (RCEEA), a public charter school for students with disabilities. RCEEA was a joint endeavor between the Virginia Department of Education, Richmond Public Schools, and VCU Rehabilitation Research and Training Center. RCEEA's mission is to provide an intensive functional life skills curriculum that is oriented toward career education and competitive employment for Richmond students, ages 14 to 22. Outcomes for all students will be competitive employment, enrollment in meaningful post-secondary programs, or other productive activity that directly contributes to the well-being of the community.
